About Central Bark Dog School

Well-loved rehabilitation and rescue centre, Dogtown South Africa launched the Central Bark Dog School in an effort to work with puppy parents on the start of their journey with their new puppy. All proceeds from Central Bark go to support Dogtown’s rescue, rehabilitation and adoption efforts.

Taking on a puppy is often done to fulfil a need within the home or family with not much thought to the fact that the new puppy, like children, needs to learn manners and how to socialise.

Central Bark Dog School is not limited to training only puppies; older dogs are welcome to spend quality time with their best friends in a variety of fun classes. There are puppy and adult group classes as well as one-on-one training sessions available.

The classes are run by qualified IMDT Dogtown staff and held in an enclosed safe, secured, fenced-in area with shade, grass and fresh water. The training is done with positive reinforcement with the aid of food treats and toys. All dogs wear harnesses and leads. No chokers, chains or other equipment will be allowed. Any form of physical punishment is not tolerated.

About trainer Joanna Banks

Trainer Joanna Banks with one of the dogs from Dogtown

Passion is a rare commodity, and I am grateful to have found mine in the world of dogs. For many years, I have dedicated my life to training and working with dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds, ages, and temperaments. Each new dog brings unique challenges and experiences that keep me motivated and passionate.

My journey with dogs began when I began to train and compete in obedience competitions with my own dogs. I quickly became interested in working with rescued dogs and helping them overcome physical or mental abuse, anxiety, and other issues. I left my career in the pharmaceutical industry and joined BarkingMad, now known as DogtownSA, a rehabilitation centre for abused and abandoned dogs, where I was able to help these dogs and their owners find happiness and fulfilment.

I understand that having a dog is one of the greatest joys in life, but it also requires patience, love, and commitment. By socialising dogs and building their confidence through positive training techniques, I have seen their personalities grow and quirks emerge. I believe that all dogs deserve a second chance and that with the right approach, it is possible to make a difference in their lives.

At DogtownSA, I served as the senior trainer and taught other caregivers how to work with the dogs and build their confidence. I also trained volunteers to understand and work with traumatised dogs and their complex behaviours. Over the years, I have trained dogs to high-grade obedience and taught various classes, from puppies to older dogs, and I am always inspired by their ability to learn and grow.

I am passionate about sharing my love for dogs and helping others see the remarkable bond that can be formed through training and positive reinforcement. Whether it’s through basic obedience training, socialisation games, or nose work, I believe that every dog has the potential to bring joy and happiness to its owner’s life. And that is why I continue to train and work with dogs.
